Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
