Department of Justice Joins Lawsuit to Stop the State of California's Congressional Map

The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.

This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.

"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.

Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.

"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.

Legal Basis

The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.

"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.

Broader Implications

The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.

Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.

Wider Consequences

The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.

The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
